INTERNATIONAL — MUTUAL STEPS WITH MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC

Sirin Orbital Systems AG receives a non-binding Letter of Interest / Support from MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CORPORATION for collaboration in the field of Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) to flying objects (ENG-3).

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is a pioneer of space technology development in Japan since the 1960s and is strongly committed to international space development and satellite construction. Founded in 1921, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is one of the world’s leading names in the manufacture and sales of electrical and electronic products and systems used in a broad range of fields and applications.

Sirin Orbital Systems AG strongly believes partnering with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation advances efforts toward the development and commercialization of the intended wireless power transfer technology. It will lead to a large market potentials in various business fields such as infrastructure monitoring, logistics, and agriculture.

ACTIVITY ENDORSEMENT — SWISS DELEGATION to ESA

Sirin Orbital Systems AG receives the support of the Swiss Delegation to ESA for a GSTP-6 Element “Develop” (De-Risk) activity, entitled “Water and Metal-Powder Micro-Propulsion System for Small Satellites”:

The need for high-thrust propulsion systems compatible with small satellites for applications such as constellation deployment, orbit maintenance and stationkeeping is particularly emerging. A high-thrust propulsion provides large velocity increments in a short time, which enables orbit transfer, orbital plane change, re-entry, and planetary orbit insertion for deep space exploration.

In the frame of this GSTP activity, we will develop an innovative micro-propulsion system concept — patent pending — for generating high thrust. The main differentiating advantages of the targeted product are (1) safe, non-toxic and non-hazardous propellant, (2) high-thrust despite compact footprint, (3) in-space availability of propellants.

This high-thrust micro-propulsion technology will expand the mission field of small satellites and is applicable for both commercial and scientific missions. It increases orbital agility and repositioning capacity of small satellites and provides in-orbit manoeuvring capabilities, e.g. course/fine orbit-correction, stationkeeping, fast orbit-raising, and controlled re-entry. In addition, a high-thrust propulsion enables smalls satellites to perform efficient in-orbit servicing operations. As for scientific missions, it makes them capable of a self-planetary orbit insertion for deep-space exploration and sample returns. It can be used for key applications such as telecommunications, space exploration and science missions, Earth observation and navigation. This innovative propulsion is specifically applicable for nano-/microsatellites where the lack of a safe and robust high-thrust propulsion system is particularly felt. Nonetheless, the technology is highly scalable and could be adapted for minisatellites up to 300kg.

This technology development has been endorsed by the following prestigious stakeholders, Astrocast, NanoAvionics and SpacePharma.

CONTRACTS AWARDEE — EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY

In Autumn 2021, Sirin Orbital Systems AG is awarded two contracts from the European Space Agency (ESA) for innovative R&D projects concerning the Wireless Power Transfer (ENG-3) and Planetary Life Support Systems (ENG-4). The projects are successfully launched and being carried out.

INTERNATIONAL — MUTUAL STEPS WITH KAJIMA CORPORATION

Sirin Orbital Systems AG receives a non-binding Letter of Interest from the Japanese major contractor KAJIMA CORPORATION, which is one of the oldest and largest construction companies in Japan, founded in 1840. KAJIMA CORPORATION is interested in future collaboration in the ENG-4 project, “Water Storage System for Lunar Life Support and Exploration”, initiated and led by Sirin Orbital Systems AG. The R&D phase of this activity is performed by the Institute of Energy Systems and Fluid Engineering (IEFE) at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), with the technical and scientific supports of the Laboratory of Food and Soft Materials (FSM) at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ).

Since 2016, KAJIMA CORPORATION has been working with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on the realization of a construction of a lunar base by R&D in a remote control assistance, autonomous motion control and automatic cooperation works. KAJIMA CORPORATION considers using SIRIN’s technology for the construction of habitats and infrastructures in space, since it provides the possibility of maintaining water in liquid state well below water’s freezing point by using a passive unfreezing method. The long-term cooperation shall be fruitful for both parties.

CENTRE FOUNDATION — SIRIN AI R&D Centre

SIRIN ORBITAL SYSTEMS AG has established an R&D Centre to strengthen its competences in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.

In support of SIRIN’s business line in development of new Downstream applications, SIRIN AI R&D Centre is founded. The Centre’s expertise is shaped around Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.

PANELLIST — GALIX CONGRESS 2021

Sirin Orbital Systems AG is honoured to be a panellist along with NASA and Aerospace’s Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies (CORDS) in the The GALIX Inaugural Congress 2021.

Global Alliance for International Collaboration in Space (GALIX) is an International Coalition to Advance and Diversify Space Innovation and Development for All Humankind.

Hosted on 18-19 March 2021 by GALIX in collaboration with NASA, Space Renaissance International (SRI), National Space Society (NSS) and Space Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), this international online event seeks to expand international collaboration in space. The development in space programs often focuses on new space technology and hardware. Yet, the ‘softer parts’—policy, regulation, law, education, training, safety and environmental standards, institutional development, and global collaborative arrangements—are also critical for holistic space development. Progress in these areas particularly depends on global collaboration. This was the focus of the GALIX Inaugural Space Conference 2021.

Sirin Orbital Systems AG contributed to the second session: “Threats to Earth from Asteroids, Solar Storms and Consideration of the Other Broader Aspects of Planetary Defense”.

ARTICLE — ROOM SPACE JOURNAL

Sirin Orbital Systems AG shares its view on
“Multi-Hazard Scenario Risk Assessment” in
ROOM Space Journal,
Issue #4(26) 2020

Views of space weather have undergone significant changes, transforming it from scientific curiosity to commercially-recognised threat. Historically, awareness of space hazards was limited to countries with operational space science missions, but the growing volume and variety of infrastructure interconnections has changed the status of space weather among the space community, while the magnitude of the associated terrestrial hazards has further broadened the remit of space weather risk analysis. The corresponding challenges and opportunities are the focus of this article.
