INTERNATIONAL — Japan & Switzerland SBSP/WPT Workshop (III)

In line with series of Swiss-Japan workshops on the thematic “Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) and Space-based Solar Power (SBSP)“, the 3rd “Japan-Switzerland SBSP/WPT Workshop” was held at the Kyoto University Tokyo Office, Tokyo, Japan, on the 29th of November 2024. This is a joint workshop co-organized by Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH) at Kyoto University and Sirin Orbital Systems AG.

This year’s workshop had a specific emphasize on the WPT related businesses in Japan and Switzerland / Europe, with speakers from Sirin Orbital Systems AG, Panasonic, SoftBank, Aeterlink, Tokyo Metropolitan University focusing their speeches on the “WPT for Powering IoT and Computer Peripheral Devices, WPT for B5G/6G era, WPT for Air-Mobility and Drones”.

On the R&D side, the workshop provided an insightful overview on recent achievements of Japan Space Systems in cooperation with JAXA/ISAS, and their ongoing world-class long-distance WPT demonstration from an airplane to a ground-receiving system examining 5-7km distance wireless power transmission in Nagano Prefecture, Kirigamine Glider Filed. JAXA/ISAS also presented latest status of the “On-orbit experiment of HIgh-precision beam control using small SAtellite for MicrowAve power transmission (OHISAMA)” mission.

This year’s workshop had a special guest speaker from the United Kingdom, Space Solar, who provided insightful updates on the UK tailwinds and headwinds related to Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP), with the priority of “Delivering Energy Security and Powering a Net Zero Future”.

COLLABORATION — ETH Zurich’s Master’s in Space Systems

In an attempt to integrate real-world space projects into ETH Space‘s curriculum in the form of a one-semester feasibility study of a mission design, providing students with practical experience from concept to completion, Sirin Orbital Systems AG‘s proposal related to a novel mission design and payload analysis for Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), featuring SIRIN’s innovative air-breathing propulsion system, was among one of 5 [out of 35] proposals selected by ETH Space for Autumn Semester 2024/2025.

The project Low ORbit Demonstrator (LORD) was carried out by a group of 6 talented students at ETH Zürich’s Master’s in Space Systems. All aspects of the mission were covered including Mission Requirements, Mission Design, Payload Selection and Justification, Mission Operations and Ground Segment, Project Plan and Life Cycle Assessment, and Future VLEO Applications and Market Analysis. The LORD mission was concluded to be suitable for an ESA F-Class Mission.

This post will be completed.
